My Little Corner

Even though an entire home or apartment can be decorated to reflect your personality or style, it can be difficult to accomplish. And usually a house, with all its nooks and crannys, wall fixtures, and television sets becomes just a place to store things, even when you are intentional about making it feel like home.

That’s why it’s nice to have a corner or a room where you feel like you’ve managed to capture the quintessential you. Maybe it’s the way a chair sits snuggled under a window with the right curtain and the right blanket or your bathroom where you spend every morning getting ready and you’ve found the perfect combination of light, towels, shower curtain, and paint. No matter where it is, it’s nice to have an area that feels like it represents who you are and what you love.

My apartment is small and I share it with a roommate so it’s complicated to decorate. Also, I’m on a tight budget and we all know how that goes. But there is a little corner in my apartment that I feel has found the perfect balance between all of the many things I am.

It has skulls, books, a typewriter, color, and flowers. It’s rough and tumble, but soft and sensitive. It’s weird and quirky and most people probably don’t want it in their home. And that’s why I like it and why I feel like it represents me well. Also, it reminds me of Frida and I love her.

Which is why I channeled her for Cinco De Mayo. Please be kind, I remember that I’m white and could never measure up to anything as brilliant as Frida.

“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.”   —Frida
